You Get What You Pay For
So ABC cancelled Roseanne after the show’s star made one too many inflammatory comments on Twitter. The announcement came after Roseanne Barr sent out a tweet comparing Valerie Jarrett, a black woman, to a character from Planet of the Apes. It’s appalling and disgusting and blatantly racist, but it’s what you expect when you throw in with someone like Barr.
Barr started her comedy career doing standup as a working class wife. As soon as she made enough money to escape the working class, she exposed her true, hate-filled heart to the world. People always say character is revealed in a crisis, but I think fame and fortune expose character just as effectively. As soon as Barr could afford to be nasty, she embraced her true nature.
Before discovering Twitter, Barr got attention by butchering the National Anthem, dressing up like Hitler, and saying stupid things whenever a microphone was pointed in her direction. None of that kept ABC from rebooting her tired old show. I guess now we know just how far someone with good ratings has to go to get kicked off the air. It’s pretty far. Other television stars should take note.
ABC’s mistake wasn’t that it put a working class family on television, it’s that it chose this particular family. I love John Goodman. Laurie Metcalf is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. Most of the cast is talented, but the show is called Roseanne. She’s the conscience and the soul and mouthpiece of the show. It was a dangerous gamble from day one. ABC can’t be surprised by this loss.
When you hire someone like Barr, you know exactly what you are getting. You can’t blame a cow because it moos. And, no, I am not comparing Roseanne Barr to a cow.
I like cows. I think cows have a lot to offer.
