Sondland might be able to plead ignorance and incompetence, but Trump cannot. Neither can Mike Pence, Mick Mulvaney, Rick Perry, Mike Pompeo, or Kurt Volker. These guys are not witless hotel magnates who flopped back-asswards into a position of power (well, most of them aren’t); these guys are expected to know and follow the law. And how about Rudy Giuliani? It seems increasingly likely that Giuliani will be disbarred and will probably end up in prison. Can you imagine the dirt he’ll spill in an effort to avoid that? Giuliani is like a rabid raccoon on a good day. Back that man into a corner and he will bite.
Our leaders should not trust feelings over facts. We should not elect anyone whose greatest strength is an ability to spout convincing nonsense. And being an outsider is not, in and of itself, a virtue. In fact, we know this. We know it because we’ve already elevated a cocksure, lying, anti-science buffoon to the White House. Let’s not make the same mistake twice.
The thing is, if your strength is the depth of your experience, you should make fewer mistakes than the new kids on the block. Joe has always been prone to gaffes. The only thing he’s proving on the campaign trail right now is that he’s a man who cannot evolve.
